Chicago Sky Star Elizabeth Williams Joins Chicago Park District for Recreation Leaders in Training Session

Rec Leaders in Training learned about positive affirmations and values

CHICAGO, IL- The Chicago Park District’s Leader in Training (RIT) at Vittum Park, 5010 W. 50th St., were joined by a very special guest, Elizabeth Williams of the Chicago Sky! The 6’3” center forward helped lead a clinic on and becoming an effective recreation leader, identifying positives values and how to apply the lessons learned to their camp experience.

The 15 RIT participants, ranging in age from 13- to 15-year-old, worked together in a group session to discuss positive ways that their roles impact summer day camp and how they may embody those values after graduating from the stipend-based program. The day started with a Q&A, gaining insight on how to remain cool under pressure and identifying the keys to success, and then creating their own personal jersey decorated with words to positively describe themselves. After self-reflection and group discussion, the RIT participants left with a positive attitude and the knowledge on what it takes to be an effective leader in the parks.

The RIT program is designed to mentor 13–15-year-olds to become future Recreation Leaders during summer day camp. Through hands on experience, RIT participants learn essential skills like leadership, communication, teamwork, and more. This summer, the program is active at 165 park sites with 1,210 participants enrolled. While they are assisting with park programs today, they will lead these in the future.
