Description

Film School is a film series project co-founded by isra rene and AJ McClenon, inviting community members from a broad spectrum of entry to view and discuss surviving films by marginalized filmmakers and/or producers. Join us for this outdoor silent film screening featuring three short silent films, accompanied by poets and sound artists performance in response to the selected films: The Bull Dogger by Richard E. Norman, a 1922 American five-reel silent Western film starring the first Black cowboy film star, Bill Pickett; Zora Neale Hurston's Fieldwork Footage 1928, a documentary style short film studying the folkloric customs, work songs, spirituals, and vernacular language of the predominantly Black logging community in Loughman, Florida; and Regeneration 1923, a film of which only one reel survives, is about finding deep treasures at sea and the nefarious elements that come along with it. The film series looks at the work of innovators from our past and places them into dialogue with contemporary artists of this day in hopes that the reach across time and modes of engagement will spark interest and excitement for members across all age groups and backgrounds. Washington Park lead artist: Imani Elizabeth Jackson.
