Have you found a migrated butterfly? “Flight of Butterflies” is a city-wide exhibit that merges nature, art, and storytelling, creating a memorable experience for all in Chicago. Local artists have adorned butterfly sculptures with original designs, expressing their unique connections to nature. Sixteen butterflies have landed in a Chicago Park District Natural Area, check out the map below to catch them all.
Across the city you can explore the diverse natural areas and immerse yourself in different native habitat types – prairies, savannas, woodlands, wetlands, and dunes. The native plants here provide vital habitat for local wildlife, including butterflies, as well as for species passing through during their annual migrations. Nectar-producing wildflowers with different bloom times are especially important for butterflies, as the variety offers sustenance across the growing season.
While natural areas are critical for wildlife, they also play a vital role in improving the health and wellbeing of people and communities. The over 90+ natural areas in Chicago offer residents and visitors a variety of opportunities to discover and appreciate the richness and beauty of nature in its many forms. While these natural areas are open year-round for everyone to enjoy at their own convenience, the Park District also offers programs and events about nature education, appreciation, and stewardship.
