Lakefront Trail Repairs Starting, Trail Closures to Occur
9/14/26 The Chicago Park District has performed a full inspection of the Lakefront Trail and hardscape along the edge throughout the entire 18 miles. There are many repairs in varying degrees that will be starting in the next few weeks and will continue throughout the next several months as weather allows.
Trail repairs will consist of asphalt patching and seal-coating as necessary. This work will begin at 6300 south/east of DuSable Lake Shore Drive and work its way north one section at a time to Foster Ave beach/east of DuSable Lake Shore Drive. Additionally, trail graphics will be applied throughout the entire trail. Edge repairs will consist of removal and replacement of deteriorated concrete as needed.
Construction signage will be placed ahead of the construction site for awareness. Please be alert and safe when visiting the trail and avoid these active construction work zones.
Chicago’s Lakefront Trails welcome residents and visitors from around the City. On any given day activity along the pedestrian and bike trails includes people commuting to work, training for marathons, caregivers with children in strollers, tourists on rental bikes, and people taking a leisurely stroll. Running from Ardmore Ave. on the north, to 71st St. on the south, the trails provide important access to the lake for recreational purposes and have increasingly become an active transportation route for many Chicagoans. The trails are open during normal operating hours. In 2018 the trail separation project was completed, dividing the former 18-mile combined use trail into an 18-mile Bike Trail and 18.5-mile Pedestrian Trail, alleviating congestion and providing a better overall park experience along Chicago’s lakefront.
The Lakefront Trail Separation Project was made possible, in part, by the generosity of Ken Griffin.
