Description
The Buena Park Neighbors sponsored the creation of the Welcome to Buena Park mural by artist Jeffrey Littleton to serve as a gateway into the community from Lincoln Park. The artist was inspired by the blue waters of Lake Michigan, green of Lincoln Park, and Prairie style windows suggesting the grid of the city. Littleton selected a Prairie style font for the mural because it is representative of Chicago and the Midwest. The Buena Park Neighbors monitor the mural for graffiti. They carefully touch up the artwork soon after it has been tagged. This mural adorns the south wall of the underpass.
The mural on the north wall was created by Rachel Slotnick, a writer and artist who teaches at Malcolm X University. After mourning the loss of a student who died in a motorcycle accident, Slotnick painted this mural as a gift to the community. It depicts a highly embellished motorcycle surrounded by birds, butterflies, foliage, and flowers. One the west side of the mural, there is a short poem that includes the short passage, "Love doesn't die, people do."
