History
This park site was leased by the Chicago Park District from the Board of Education in 1959. The park was transferred to the Chicago Park District in 1991. For most of its existence, the park was known as Oakley Playground, after a neighboring street. In 1999, the Park District renamed the site Little Venice to distinguish it from nearby Oakley Playlot. Little Venice was the 19th-century nickname for the park’s Gage Park community. Wooden plank sidewalks were known to float down the community’s roadways in torrential rains, causing residents to liken gage Park to Venice, Italy, and its canals.
