Description

Nearly seven acres of native dune habitat flourish at Loyola Beach Dunes along Lake Michigan in the East Rogers Park neighborhood. Here visitors can spot nesting shorebirds and a variety of native dune wildflowers and grasses from paved trails and the Loyola Beach pier. Soft-surface (sand) paths through the dunes allow close views of the unique biodiversity of this habitat type. Natural areas along the lakefront help stabilize the shoreline, minimize erosion, and reduce sand deposition in other areas of the park.

In addition to maintenance conducted by the park district, Loyola Beach Dunes benefits from the dedication and hard work of volunteers who collect and scatter native seed, plant native species, pick up trash, monitor vegetation and birds, and remove invasive species. Learn more about volunteer opportunities by visiting our Community Stewardship Program page.

Help keep wildlife wild, safe, and healthy by following posted signage and Natural Areas Rules and Regulations. For questions regarding Chicago Park District Natural Areas, email nature@chicagoparkdistrict.com
