Description

McKinley Park Natural Area contains over 13 acres of native aquatic, wetland, prairie, and savanna habitats in the northeast corner of McKinley Park. The pond is surrounded by 20 fishing stations as well as a pier and boardwalk. Each fishing station is landscaped with native wetland plants, offering visitors a unique urban fishing experience. Mulch and gravel trails through the savanna and prairie habitats lead to a council ring where community members can gather and enjoy the natural area. Paved paths border the natural area.

In addition to maintenance conducted by the park district, McKinley Park Natural Area benefits from the dedication and hard work of volunteers who collect and scatter native seed, plant native species, pick up trash, monitor vegetation and birds, and remove invasive species. Learn more about volunteer opportunities by visiting our Community Stewardship Program page.

Help keep wildlife wild, safe, and healthy by following posted signage and Natural Areas Rules and Regulations. For questions regarding Chicago Park District Natural Areas, email nature@chicagoparkdistrict.com
