Description

In 1994, Edmond Gueringer painted the Signal:Bon Voyage mural on panels across the railing along the second story of the Rainbow Fleet station (now known as the Judd Goldman Sailing Center) adjacent to Burnham Harbor. The Park District's first black sailing instructor, Gueringer felt passionate about the Rainbow Fleet program which has taught thousands of Chicagoans to sail since it was first established in the 1930s. He wanted to brighten the exterior facade of a non-descript building and to inspire boaters. Using the Chapman Piloting and Seamanship Manual, Gueringer used the International Code of Flags and Pennants to spell out the words Signal Bon Voyage. Chicagoans have enjoyed this colorful secret message for over 20 years.
