Description

The Parkways Foundation raised $700,000 for this playground which is accessible to children of all abilities. The playground celebrates the history of Washington Park and its surrounding Bronzeville community.

Artists Rahmann Barnes and Maria Gaspar of the Chicago Public Art Group produced concrete pavement medallions incised with historical text and iconography. There are also quotes by and about famous historical figures who had ties with the park and the Bronzeville community incised into the walkways. A large number of children, including students who participate in after school programs at Washington Park, participated in the creation of mosaic seating walls for the playground.

Location: South of the Aquatic Center and east of S. Martin Luther King Drive
