A major construction project continues at the former Daley Bicentennial Plaza site, now being transformed into the magnificent Lakefront recreation center, Maggie Daley Park. As part of a staggered opening, the ice skating ribbon and playground area is now open to the public, and the fieldhouse will be open for winter programs beginning January 5, 2015.

The Skating Ribbon
In the heart of downtown Chicago, with the City’s skyline as a backdrop, a ribbon of ice winds through a rolling landscape providing an ice skating experience unlike any other. The skating ribbon is dramatically different from typical civic ice rinks, creating a multisensory activity that is integrated into the landscape. Skaters can experience “alpine in the city” as they lace up their ice skates and follow a path twice the length of a lap around a traditional skating rink.  Complementing the ribbon are places to enjoy a cup of hot chocolate, rent skates and scale the climbing wall. In the summertime, the Ribbon can be used for activities such as roller-skating and scooters, gallery exhibitions and special events.

Field House
The Field House is a central hub for the indoor and outdoor programming of the site throughout the seasons. The core programs such as the day camps and pre-school have been retained; while additional program activities that support the new park features like the climbing park and skating ribbon will be added to the offerings of the field house along with fitness programs. Some event space will also be available for rent beginning in December, 2014.

Other Amenities Scheduled to Open in the Spring of 2015
In 2015, visitors can enjoy the Climbing Park with features on the wall for experts and beginners, the Play Garden for children, an Enchanted Forest with a mirrored maze and kaleidoscope, The Lagoon, The Sea and The Harbor play apparatus for toddlers, a Wave Lawn for recreation for all ages, a Slide Crater with spiral slide and wide and rail slide features, as well as access to event rental space in the fieldhouse and open lawn

The dramatic transformation of this space is already evident and amazing.

History

Maggie Daley Park History In 2014, the Chicago Park District began transforming the northeastern part of Grant Park into Maggie Daley Park. For many decades, an expansive surface parking lot occupied this site with a portion of the Illinois Central’s sunken rail yard extending along the northwestern edge. In the mid-1970s, the Chicago Park District replaced the old park lot with the Richard J. Daley Bicentennial Plaza, a complex that provided a new 3700-car underground garage with major recreational facilities. Dedicated to Chicago’s former Mayor Richard J. Daley (1902 - 1976), the facility included a new field house for indoor recreational programming as well as several outdoor amenities such as tennis courts, an ice skating rink, picnic areas, and Grant Park’s first playground. In 2009, the City of Chicago and the Park District began plans to renovate the underground parking garage and field house and enliven the outdoor elements in this area. Over the next several years, thousands of citizens participated in community workshops and meetings to help determine the programming for this prominent lakeshore site which lies just east of Millennium Park. The Park District hired Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, an internationally renowned landscape architecture firm to design the new park space. Serving as a counterpoint to the symmetry and formality of Grant Park, the design incorporates curvilinear forms, dramatic topography, and many whimsical elements. The Chicago Park District Board of Commissioners recently renamed the site in honor of Maggie Daley (1943 – 2011) Chicago’s longtime first lady, who was deeply committed to improving the lives of children and making the city culturally rich for all of its citizens. Born and raised in New Lebanon, Pennsylvania, Margaret Ann Corbett graduated from the University of Dayton in Ohio. While working as a professional for the Xerox Corporation, she began working in Chicago, where she intended to stay for only a year or two. In 1970, Maggie met Richard M. Daley, the oldest son of Mayor Richard J. Daley. The couple married in 1972, and Richard M. Daley was soon elected to the state senate. He went on to serve as Cook County State’s Attorney and as Mayor of Chicago from 1989 to 2011. Maggie Daley was involved in many civic projects and cultural organizations. By the time the Daley’s fourth and youngest child entered school in the late 1980s, Maggie became increasingly committed to these activities. She served on the auxiliary board of the Art Institute and the Woman’s Board of the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. She assisted her husband in efforts to beautify the city and make it a cultural haven. She helped raise funds for the Chicago Cultural Center and launch Gallery 37, a cultural arts program for youth that included job training. This led to the creation of After School Matters, a non-profit organization that offers Chicago teens innovative, after-school activities that focus on the arts, literature, science, and technology. A dynamic force behind many Chicago non-profit organizations, Maggie Daley was also involved with the Golden Apple Foundation and Children at the Crossroads Foundation. After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2002, she remained extremely active. Today, Maggie Daley is remembered for her grace, perseverance, zest for life, and commitment to Chicago.

Description
