Classes Available for Viewing Now, Registration Kicks off December 4

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Chicago Park District today announced online registration for winter park programming opens December 4 and 5, following a record-breaking fall session.

“Residents across Chicago are taking part in Park District programming in record numbers because they offer unparalleled variety, affordability and convenience,” said Mayor Emanuel. “No matter your age, neighborhood or income level, Parks has something for everyone and is helping to keep our residents active and engaged all year long.”

This year’s fall session topped enrollment for any previous registration since the Park District began collecting data on park program participation in 2012. This marks the 4th time in the history of the Park District that more than 100,000 residents have enrolled. The winter session is expected to continue the upward trend.

“Staying physically active in the winter months is a daunting task, but by no means impossible when there is a plethora of park programs being offered for everyone’s enjoyment at local parks,” said Chicago Park District Superintendent and CEO Michael P. Kelly. “Whether it is indoors or outdoors, the Park District makes the perfect place to walk, run and workout.”

Online registration opens on December 4 for parks located WEST of California Avenue and on December 5 for parks located EAST of California Avenue at 9 a.m.

In-person registration begins either Saturday, December 9 or Monday, December 11, depending upon the park.  Most winter programs run from the week of January 18 to the week of March 12.

There is no lack of interesting, fun and exciting classes, workshops and winter-themed adventures being offered at parks citywide. Winter park programs run the gamut from popular fitness and gymnastics classes to swimming and basketball activities. Wellness programs provide varied options for winter physical activity and focus on helping park patrons of all ages maintain a healthy lifestyle. Teens and adults registering for winter sports leagues also have a safe place to convene and engage in healthy play in Chicago’s parks.

In addition, winter break camps offer children a safe place in their neighborhoods to socialize and stay engaged with sports, arts and crafts and many cultural activities while school is out, starting the week of December 25, at many park locations.
