Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary

Throughout Chicago, our park system is filled with nature. The city's parks contain more than 1,900 acres of critical habitat for local and migratory wildlife, accounting for more than 20% of our total parkland.

There are many ways to get your nature fix in the city. Visit a natural area and observe native plants and animals, enjoy a peaceful afternoon in a nature garden, bring the family to a nature play space, or explore one of our three nature centers.

These unique places provide opportunities to improve one's physical and mental health. Natural areas are open year-round from dawn to dusk for everyone to enjoy at their own convenience.  Additionally, the Park District offers nature programs such as camping, gardening, fishing, other experiences for all ages. To volunteer in a natural area, find a community stewardship workday near you or check out one of the many community science projects happening throughout the parks year-round.

Natural Areas Rules and Regulations protect the plants, animals, and native habitats found in the parks. Leave nature as you find it for others to enjoy, and help us keep wildlife wild, safe, and healthy.

With so much to offer the nature enthusiast, it's no wonder that Chicago is dubbed the "City in a Garden."
