On May 1, 1934, the 22 independent park districts that existed in the city of Chicago consolidated to become one, the Chicago Park District. The newly formed Park District inherited more than 130 parks, including 83 fieldhouses, 13 beaches, five golf courses, and 50 swimming pools.  Today as the Chicago Park District celebrates 85 years of serving the city, it boasts more than 8,800 acres of parkland, more than 600 parks, 26 miles of lakefront, 12 museums, two world-class conservatories, 16 historic lagoons, and nearly 50 nature areas.

The Chicago Park District Office of Budget and Management is responsible for the oversight and coordination of the annual operating budget, inviting public input related to the recommended budget, and submitting the budget for adoption by the Chicago Park District Board of Commissioners. As part of the budget process, the District hosts forums for the public to provide input related to the budget. In addition, a Public Hearing on the recommended budget is held where the Superintendent presents the recommended budget to the Chicago Park District Board of Commissioners.
Whether you are 9 months or 90 years old, there is a program for you offered in the Chicago Park District. The Chicago Park District is responsible for 26 indoor pools, 51 outdoor pools, 15 pools in schools, 36 Sports 37™ locations with 42 apprenticeships, and 26 miles of lakefront including 23 swimming beaches plus one inland beach.
The Chicago Park District offers a variety of athletic programs for youth and teens to receive training necessary for competition at various levels with an emphasis on learning basic skills and incorporating the rules of fair play and sportsmanship. Athletes in these specialty programs compete on the local, state, regional and national levels. Teens are taught hands-on job training skills in the Sports 37™ program and all programs strive to encourage a healthy lifestyle.
The Department of Audit conducts internal audits to assess the integrity of financial reporting systems, the effectiveness of internal controls, and the efficiency of established procedures, in order to help departments increase efficiency, effectiveness, transparency and accountability. Audit reports on its work to the Audit Management Committee, which makes recommendations to the Committee on Administration of the Board of Commissioners.
This spring the Chicago Park District is launching the Agents of Discovery App in a few parks and other areas of significance within the Austin community.  This app will make your park visit and walk a fun, historical, and gaming experience. The app will feature an Avatar, an icon or figure that represents the Austin Community.  We would love to hear what you think the Avatar should be!  Please share your ideas by answering the questions in the form below, and uploading a photo or sketch if you would like to. It can be a person, a superhero, a local hero or mascot.
